Diplomate of American Environmental Society (DipAES)TM   is  the highest designation for  qualified environmental practitioners who have the specific qualifications based on education, training, and experience to render professional opinion, decision, prepare and/or implement appropriate plans and strategies in any of the following areas:

  • Environmental Site Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Site Investigation, or Environmental Remediation;
  • Environmental Policy Development and/or Implementation/Enforcement;
  • Environmental Education and/or Research; and
  • Environmental Work involving Laboratory Analysis of Environmental Samples.
  • Environmental Work involving Wildlife and Nature Preservation, and other environmental work not included elsewhere.

This designation requires the following:

  • A bachelor’s or higher degree (or their equivalent for those who studied outside the United States) from an accredited institution of higher education in a discipline of engineering, science, law, management or other environmentally relevant areas and the equivalent of twenty (20) years of full-time relevant experience.  Schools that are exempt from accreditation requirements by virtue of government legislation are assumed accredited.  A master’s degree or a doctoral degree (or their equivalent for those who studied outside the United States) in any relevant discipline (e.g., engineering, science, health, management, business, law,  etc.) may be counted as the equivalent of additional two years and three years, respectively, of relevant experience.  A successful operation of an environmentally oriented company as owner, partner, CEO, president, etc., for at least five (5) years will be counted as the equivalent of one additional year of relevant experience for every three (3) years of operation for up to the equivalent of five (5) years.  For example, an environmental practitioner who has a doctoral degree, was employed for two (2) years and later operated his own business as a CEO for twelve (12) years will have an equivalent of twenty-one (21) years of full-time relevant experience (i.e., 2 years employment, plus 3 years for doctoral degree, plus 12 years for 12 years in business, plus 4 additional equivalent years for operating his business, 1 year for each 3 years).  
  • At least ten (10) years of experience at a supervisory position and/or position of personal responsibility for the control and direction of relevant work within a professional’s scope of competence.
  • For specific experience, must be able to document at least the minimum requirements specified for the desired area corresponding to that of the Professional Environmental Assessor (PEnvA)TM .
